Loving cats now fighting after raccoon attack

My 2 cats are just 1 year old now and are bro. and sis. They have been together all the time. They eat, sleep, and play together all the time until just recently when Oden (male kitty) got attacked by a raccoon and had surgery to repair the damages. He lost most of his tail, has a long incision across his tummy to repair a bite hole and has numerous claw wounds across his hind legs and hips. After surgery and 2 days at the vet he is home now and recovering wonderfully. He's still on antibiotics to ward off any infections.

The problem is that his sister, Hookah, who he loves dearly now is either scared of him or mad at him. She hisses and growls at him everytime he gets close to her. He just wants to sleep with her like they have always done and she won't have anything to do with him. It's heart breaking to see this happen.

Does anybody have any ideas why this could be happening and how I can help them through this. I'd hate to see them become so distant from each other after a year being inseperable.

I would suppose that Oden smells differently now than he did before he went to the vet. Hopefully it will just take a little time for Hookah to get used to him again. That's so so sad after all he's been through.

Keep us advised as to how he gets along.

I'm sorry that I don't have any advice (although I do hope that Carol G is right)...please, though, keep us updated if things get better (or worse).

Thank you for your concern and replies to my dilema with Oden and Hookah. I'm happy to say that today Oden got the last of his stitches out and got a clean bill of health. He doesn't even miss his tail. LOL He is also off all antibiotics which is a releif because it was getting harder every day to get those pills down him.

Hookah has been slowly getting less skitterish around him and I'm thinking that everybody was right about him smelling like medicine. She still has occasions when she growls and hisses at him but less then last week.

Keep your fingers crossed that they become the loving siblings again because they are soooo cute together.

Thanks again for your words of advice and concern.

I'm so glad to hear that things are looking better; for Oden's health and Hookah's attitude!!!

Thank you for the update.

I do think the other poster was righ about the smell. All my cat get along great, but if one goes to the vet and they come home an smell funny the fights start. Something that mite help is rescue remedy you can get it a pet guys or google it and find it somewhere else it made from a flower and calms them you can put in the mouth or on a ear or in water works great for most cats. But I think it just the smell of the raccoon and the vet that is the problem. I know poor Oden just wants comfort. Something else I read about on another board is vanilla put a bit all cats they will smell the same, being careful not the get any on Odan's wounds. Sending a good chin scratch for Oden.

Thanks for your concern and good ideas. Luckily Oden healed very well from all his wounds. He did lose his beautiful long fluffy tail but he's still as wonderful as ever. The good news is that he and his sister Hookah are back to their old selves and loving each other as much as before the attack. They play, sleep, eat and everything else cats love to do together again. I think you were all right about the smell thing. Thank you all for the good advice and wonderful support.
