spraying

My 14 year old neutered male cat has started spraying in the house - this started a few years back. He will go for periods without it being so bad and then suddenly he will start spraying everywhere. I have tried everything I know to try. My vet says lock him in the bathroom and don't let him out but I can't do that. He is extremely attached to me and me to him. Surely there is a solution. He gets a lot of attention and love.

I use Rescue Remedy (the people version, not the pet version) on one of mine for anxiety issues. It seems to tone down the spraying incidents although it doesn't alleviate it, it makes it much less in occurence. I get it in the organic/holistic section of our Wegman's Grocery Store. I am not into holistic meds too much but someone recommended it and it seems to help me. You just squirt a bit of the dropperful into the mouth. Good luck.
