Mark, You have my sincere sympathies at this time. You just never know when it will happen, but when it does, it hurts all the same. We, too, have a cat that fetches - Lazarus, a cat my brother rescued. Laz is my brother's cat, sometimes more dog than cat. He'll even wake my brother up to play. So I know what you're feeling with this loss. A special cat, who will remain in your memories forever. Be thankful for the time he was with you. I'm glad he changed your mind & gathered you into his spell. God Bless you & your family.

I am so sorry to hear about Grayson. I have been owned by cats for 60 years, and it never gets easier. No matter how many cats you have known, there always seems to be that extra-special one, the one that you will tell stories about for years and years. And even though we know how badly it will hurt someday when they are gone, we still seek out another forever friend, because of the love and joy they bring. My sympathies are with you and your family. And yes, I firmy believe that we will see our pets some day in heaven!

As I sit here with tears streaming down my face I wonder how this sad news hits me so very hard. Then I realize it’s not just about Grayson but is also the fear and worry I have for my 19 year old Kricket who remains in good health and appears capable of being around quite a bit longer. I also still grieve for our Scooter who we lost to the country farm road in front of our house several years ago. Both are “tuxedo” cats like Grayson. Thanks Mark for sharing your loss. We all must face it sooner or later and while the hurt eases it never entirely goes away.

For Mark Mason and his family:
My heart goes out to you and especially to your son for the loss of a family member, Indy. We also lost a precious boy cat named Scooter to speeders along our farm road three years ago so I know how badly it hurts! I guess I thought he was smart enough not to run across in front of a vehicle. Now we celebrate the life of our old girl, Kricket, and hope she makes it to 20 or even more as long as she is healthy and feels good.
Our Kricket is now 18 ½ years and holding. She seems to have some hearing loss but how can you tell with a cat who is used to ignoring whenever they choose? She was born in this house back in March of 1993 and has always been a house cat with privileges… that is she goes outdoors whenever she chose. We live out in the country here in Missouri so the “call of the wild” was always strong for her, her mother, and two of her brothers that we kept from the litter. We love our dear cats!

At 12 it's hard to tell if he's in pain, disturbed about how he is feeling inside or loosing his awareness of where he is. Some cats age better then others. Since he calms down as soon as you pick him up,pet him and stroke his back,IMHO, you should have his vision checked. If he can't see you clearly anymore he would be distressed and start to cry. I'm not sure about cats and vision problems but it may just be that he can't find you,and no amount of calming scents will settle him. It may be necessary to take him to the veterinary school to get an accurate assessment of his vision. Ask your vet to do a thorough exam and to check his vision. The thyroid gland does all sorts of things to the body. In people it can lead to blindness, dogs will often loose their coat from rubbing their backs or chewing on a particular spot on a leg or stomach or back. The thyroid will make a persons skin itch all over all the time, does the same to dogs and cats(speaking from personal experience with all three). The timing of the blood draw to check the dosage is often critical and a half hour one way or the other can make a huge difference. If I were a gambler I place a large bet on the likelyhood of his loss of vision. Let us know please.

My 12 yo boy Gaz has been acting very out of sorts lately. He has been living with me in my studio apartment for six months, and was fine in the beginning. He would curl up on my lap every chance he got, come to bed with me at night, and was just a very contented little man! I have a Feliway defuser plugged in at all times.

However, a few months ago he started to change. There were no changes to his environment/food/medication. He started crying a lot more. Gaz has always been a little vocal - but this noise is incessant. He will sit on the windowsill/couch/floor and meow at me continuously. He has food, water, clean litter and he doesn't seem to be in physical pain. I'll pick him up and give him lots of love and cuddles. He will settle down instantly, purring very loudly, and will stay on my lap for anywhere up to 45 minutes. But then he will jump down, go and sit somewher and cry at me again! I will give him more love, more lap-sitting ensues, and then the same thing again! He will never approach me for cuddles. He never tries to run out the front door, and he has lots of favourite spots.

He no longer comes to bed with me either :( I have picked up about 8 "claw shells" in the past couple of weeks as well (i.e. a layer of his claws seems to be coming off? apparently commonly associated with hyperthyroidism).
He has hyperthyroidism and is medicated for it. The vet recently checked everything and said the drugs were working and it was not his thyroid. She has now prescribed anti-anxiety medication for Gaz! It has been about 2 weeks, and the only change in behaviour so far is that he has stopped eating! The vet seems to think its the solution - but something about that doesn't sit quite right with me.

I don't know if it is affection he wants, or he just likes it so much that he forgets what he was upset about! Or should I be worried about dementia?

He seems to cry more at night. However, we have to have sit-down cuddle time in the morning too. I feel like the worst mum in the world, leaving my crying boy at home all day!

I loved watching the video of Indiana playing in the sheet. My female Prissy loves to do that also. The more you play with her, the more she wants to play. And boy does she purr when she's doing that. Thanks for the video !!
